Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
A structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.
Unlike other treatments that focus on directly altering the emotions, thoughts and responses resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR therapy focuses directly on the memory, and is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms.
Compassion Focused Therapy is a wonderful therapy to address the difficulties which we experience as a result of frequent traumatic experiences characterised by shame blame guilt and self-criticism. Compassion Focused Therapy combines evolutionary and social psychology to enable us to develop a more compassionate relationship with ourselves. Even if you have not experienced trauma, we could all do with a little more self compassion in our lives!
Emotional Focused Approach which places special emphasis on mindfulness can be used to address problematic behaviours such as binge eating; substance misuse; self-harm; anger; avoidance amongst others. I will spend time helping you to understand the strong feelings behind the urge to engage in these behaviours and help you to overcome them.
